Nevada's board barely showed up on Friday, and what did show up did not go well.
Bishop Gorman, Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon and Mater Academy East Las Vegas were all on bye. Four more played on Thursday, because every Clark County school moved its game for Rosh Hashanah. That left two board teams playing on a Friday night, and one of those was frozen overnight.
Faith Lutheran 36, Morgan 54
Morgan is a Utah school. It is not on our Utah board and it is not on any national board.
It came to Las Vegas and scored 54 on the eighth-ranked team in Nevada, and George Thurston scored six touchdowns doing it. Morgan is 4-1.
This is the only result on a Nevada board this week where a ranked team lost to an unranked one, and the margin was 18.
Damonte Ranch took the Cross Saw
The one clean piece of Friday business. Damonte Ranch beat Galena 28-7 in Reno in the Battle for the Cross Saw, its first home game of the season, and stayed unbeaten.
Damonte Ranch came onto this board at seventh a week ago as a new entry at 3-0. It has now won four, and northern Nevada continues to take up more of this board than it did a month ago.
What Thursday produced
Four Clark County board teams played and all four won.
Palo Verde beat Durango 38-18. Coronado beat Desert Pines 46-10. Liberty of Henderson beat Desert Oasis 42-0. Foothill of Henderson beat Las Vegas High 35-28, the only one of the four that was close.
Those are four wins over teams none of which is ranked, in a week where the top of the board did not play at all.
The one we froze, and then settled
Churchill County, second in the state, beat Sparks 51-0.
We held that score back overnight because three different finals were circulating, 58-0, 51-0 and 16-0, and three numbers on one game means the game has none. It is settled now, and the way it settled is worth a sentence.
The 51-0 is on four surfaces including a full quarter-by-quarter line, 30, 14, 0 and 7. The 58-0 turned out to belong to a different game entirely, Spring Creek beating Sparks 58-0 on August 28, which is Sparks' other shutout loss of the season. The 16-0 corresponds to nothing: not the varsity, not the junior varsity, which Churchill County won 59-0, and not any running score in the game, because the Greenwave were never on 16.
Churchill County is 5-0.
