Bishop Gorman went into Santa Ana on Friday night and beat Mater Dei 25-8. That is the result of the week, and the board treats it that way. Gorman moves up two to 10th. Mater Dei falls nine to 19th.
Nine places for a one-loss team is a big move, and it is the right one. Mater Dei did not lose a close game to a peer. It scored eight points at home against a team we had two spots below it, and the margin was 17. A loss like that moves a team out of the top ten and behind teams that spent the same weekend winning big.
The top of the board did not move much, and it should not have
St. Frances Academy beat Hewlett Sports Academy 43-0 and stays first. Santa Margarita shut out Norco 34-0 and stays second. IMG Academy went to The First Academy and won 48-27. St. Thomas Aquinas won 40-7 at Archbishop McCarthy. Four holds at the top, all four by at least 21 points.
The one change inside the top six is Baylor School over Buford. Baylor beat Christ Presbyterian Academy 42-0. Buford went to Grayson and won 23-13. Both are unbeaten. Baylor moves to fifth, Buford to sixth, and the gap between them is one place, which is what a 42-0 and a 23-13 on the same night should produce.

Who climbed
North Crowley, 16th to 13th. A 47-30 win at Duncanville is the second win over a board team on North Crowley's card, after Southlake Carroll.
Washington of Massillon, 31st to 26th. Won 23-21 at St. Edward. A road win over a board team in Ohio in September is worth five places, and St. Edward's two-place drop is small on purpose, because a two-point loss to a team now ranked 26th is not a bad loss.
Cherry Creek, 39th to 32nd. Won 16-15 at Valor Christian in the Out West Game of the Week. A one-point road win in that game is worth seven places.
Mountain Ridge of Herriman, 42nd to 36th. Went to Temecula and beat Chaparral 54-41. Utah's only unbeaten team on the national board is now 6-0.
St. John's College of Washington, 82nd to 48th. Won 15-14 at West Boca Raton. A one-point road win in Florida over a team we had 32nd is the kind of result that moves a team 34 places, and West Boca's 17-place fall is the other half of the same game.
Roman Catholic, 99th to 51st, and Bergen Catholic, 96th to 61st. Both are 2-2. Both were placed too low last week. Roman Catholic beat Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 28-6 and carries a loss to St. John Bosco. Bergen Catholic went to St. Peter's Prep and won 33-16. Neither move is about the opponent this weekend. Both are about the card as a whole.
Who fell
Liberty of Peoria, 22nd to 31st. Lost 30-22 at Basha. Basha is not on this board, and a loss to a team that is not on the board costs more than a loss to one that is. Nine places is the price. It is not more than nine, because the loss was by eight, on the road, and nothing else on Liberty's card changed.
Duncanville, 37th to 100th. Duncanville is 1-3. The three losses are to Allen, DeSoto and North Crowley, all three on this board, and the one win is over Cedar Hill. A team that has lost to three ranked opponents is not the same as a team that has lost to three unranked ones, which is why Duncanville is still here. It is 100th because three losses in September is three losses in September.
Centennial of Peoria, 38th to 90th. Centennial is 4-0 and beat Mesa 20-7. The drop is not about the Mesa game. It is about four wins, none of them over a ranked team. When one comes, it will move.
Prosper, 86th to 95th. Lost 51-21 at home to Allen. St. Peter's Prep, 91st to 96th. Lost 33-16 at home to Bergen Catholic. Malvern Prep, 94th to 99th. Lost 12-7 at St. Joseph's Prep, its second loss to a board team in three games.
