When our Arizona board debuted in August, we wrote that a Liberty win over Corner Canyon would reorder how we read that state. We printed it again on Friday morning, eleven hours before kickoff, and we added a sentence: that offer stands.
Liberty 38, Corner Canyon 24. The offer is now a bill.
Corner Canyon led by 10 and then stopped scoring
The Chargers were in front 24-14. They did not put another point on the board.
Liberty scored the last 24 points of the game. That is not our arithmetic, it is Corner Canyon's own account of its own loss, posted from Peoria on Friday night, and a program does not describe a defeat that plainly unless the defeat was that plain.
Carson Hilton, who was covering it, had Liberty outscoring Corner Canyon 24-7 after halftime. Greg DeMarrais called it a 10-point second-half comeback and named the two plays that turned it: a tip-drill touchdown caught by Carter Rothe, and a pick-six by Kaden Miller.
A tipped ball and an interception returned for a score. That is 14 points Corner Canyon's offense never got the chance to answer, and it is the difference in a 14-point game.
What we said about Corner Canyon on Friday morning
We said nobody had finished within 30 points of them this season. Davis lost 51-14. Timpview went down 40-7. Fremont did not score at all in a 49-0 loss.
We said the schedule had finally found an opponent who could ask a real question.
It asked. Corner Canyon is 3-1.
What we said about Liberty
We said sophomore quarterback Jason Haines threw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns in a 58-18 win over Mesa High, and that Liberty had spent its opener making the whole idea sound reasonable.
Liberty came onto the national board this week at 46. Corner Canyon was 14th and Utah's No. 1. Those two numbers are what we brought to Peoria, and one of them did not survive the night.
Head coach Colin Thomas has a team that just beat a top-15 program by scoring 24 unanswered against it, with a sophomore quarterback and a senior receiver, Braxton Huynh, who is committed to San Diego State.
The promise
Here is the part we do not get to be coy about.
We wrote in August that this specific result would change how we read Arizona, and we repeated it on Friday, and now it has happened. A board that does not move after the thing it said would move it is not a board, it is a preference.
What we are not going to do is announce the move at midnight in a recap. Monday is when the boards get built, against every result from the weekend, and that includes the one happening in Costa Mesa while this was going on, where Basha, Arizona's No. 1 and 16th in the country, was losing 23-17 to Orange Lutheran. Arizona's fourth-ranked team beat a top-15 program on the same night its best team lost. Liberty's number changes. So does Corner Canyon's. So does Basha's. The size of all three is Monday's work, and it will be done in public with the reasoning attached.
