There is an In-N-Out on the edge of Folsom that turns into a football building about an hour after a home win, and on Friday night it was standing room only. That is the local measure of what just happened, and it is a better one than anything we can put in a table.
Mission Viejo came north. Folsom won 35-21.
What the number is answering
Last September these two played in Orange County and Mission Viejo won 53-14. MaxPreps called it the worst defeat Folsom had taken since 2006. We put that sentence in Friday morning's column, because it was the honest frame for the rematch, and because there was no reading of this season that said it was going to be different.
Folsom had needed overtime to beat Cardinal Newman in its opener. Mission Viejo had scored 132 points in two games. And we reported Friday morning, on the Folsom Times, that the Bulldogs would be without senior receiver Rob Larson, out with a hamstring injury and expected to miss at least six weeks.
They won by 14 anyway.
Brody Rudnicki had the night
Folsom quarterback Brody Rudnicki accounted for five touchdowns, throwing and running, per Matt Moreno, who was at the game. Cal quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich was in the stands watching him, per the same report. Rudnicki's late six-yard touchdown run made it 35-21, per Cal-Hi Sports.
The game ended with a sack by EJ Coleman, per Moreno, who has Coleman committed to Washington State.

What this is for Folsom
Folsom is a public school in a sport where the teams above it mostly are not.
That is the whole subtext of a schedule that goes out and finds Mission Viejo, and De La Salle before that, and Serra of San Mateo before that. Folsom has a De La Salle scalp already, a 28-27 win in the 2021 Northern California 1-AA bowl. It has beaten Serra. It has beaten Pittsburg. What it had not done, until Friday, was take down a Southern California program of Mission Viejo's standing on a night when everybody was watching, and it had been beaten badly the last time it tried.
Now it has, and it did it at home, and it did it without its best receiver.
Coach Paul Doherty has a lot of wins. This is a different kind.
Where this lands is Monday's problem
One thing does not go in this piece, and it is the thing everybody is going to ask about first.
The Bulldogs came into Friday at No. 50 nationally and Mission Viejo came in at No. 30. What Friday does to those two numbers is Monday's work, weighed against every other result from the weekend, and we are not going to pre-announce it inside a recap of a game we watched four hours ago. Beating a top-30 team at home is the kind of thing boards are built to notice. It will get noticed.
