The last team to beat Thompson was Hoover. On Friday night at the Hoover Met, Thompson made sure that line expires.
No. 12 Thompson beat Hoover 31-14, the Warriors' 11th straight win, and it moved them to 6-0 and 4-0 in Class 6A Region 3 play, according to the Hoover Sun. Hoover falls to 3-4.
It started with the defense. Trent McCorvey picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown with 10:15 left in the first quarter. CJ Cowley added a 37-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the quarter, and Thompson took a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Hoover's one swing. Ethan Maxwell's 40-yard field goal made it 17-0 with 8:54 left in the third. Seventeen seconds later Andrew Renfroe returned the kickoff 89 yards for a Hoover touchdown, and for a moment the building had a game again.
Cowley closed the door. Thompson answered with a 1-yard Cowley run at 5:58 of the third, and in the fourth Cowley caught a 9-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-7. Uriah Crawford's 7-yard run with 1:55 left set the final.
Hoover coach Chip English put it plainly to the Hoover Sun: "You give them seven early, and don't score in the red zone twice."
What it means. Hoover had beaten Thompson in each of the last two seasons by a combined four points. This one was decided by 17, and it was never close after the first quarter. Thompson plays Hewitt-Trussville next. Hoover, on a two-game skid, plays Vestavia Hills.
