Trinity's game-day notice went up Monday and read like a concert bill. Lots open at 4:30. Gates at 5:30. Clear bags or a clutch no bigger than six inches by four. Metal detectors for everybody. No cash at the window.
And one line, four days out, in plain type: "This game is sold out."
A September non-conference game against a private school from Tennessee, and Louisville bought every seat. They know what is coming.
What is coming is David Gabriel Georges
He is the reigning MaxPreps National Player of the Year. He is a five-star, the No. 11 player in the 2027 class on 247Sports and the No. 2 running back in the country on their board. We have him first. He committed to Tennessee on July 22 over Ohio State and Ole Miss. He is 6-0 and 210 pounds and he is from Terrebonne, Quebec, which is not a sentence that turns up often in a story about SEC recruiting.
Last season he ran for 1,756 yards and 27 touchdowns at nearly 11 yards a carry, and Baylor went 12-0 and won the Tennessee Division II Class AAA title. In one playoff game against McCallie he ran for 431 yards and seven scores.
This season he has 445 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in three games. Last Friday at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee he carried 16 times for 196 yards and three of them. Baylor's own game notes have him averaging better than 12 yards an attempt.
His coach, Erik Kimrey, was asked in January what the weaknesses were.
"I don't think he has any weaknesses."
Gabriel Georges himself has less patience for the conversation. After the opener, when the argument about whether he was the first or second back in America started up again, he posted this:
"Thanks for all the support it's crazy but I'm sick of talking about rankings. Whether I'm ranked second or not who cares?"
Andrew Ivins, who runs scouting for 247Sports, has called him "a physical freak that's extremely hard to get on the ground." The written evaluation reaches for Trent Richardson. Other people have reached for Derrick Henry.
He is not the only reason to buy a ticket
Baylor's quarterback is Keegan Croucher, a four-star Ole Miss commit who transferred in from Cheshire Academy in Connecticut for his senior year. Against Rabun Gap he threw first-half touchdowns of 32, 80 and 19 yards and added a 77-yard completion.
The 80 and the 19 went to sophomores.
Antwaun Adams, who everybody calls Cornbread, is a four-star in the class of 2028 ranked 96th nationally, with 24 offers already and a touchdown in each of Baylor's three games. Braxton Rein is a 6-6, 230-pound four-star tight end, also class of 2028, ranked 44th in the country with 30 offers. Neither of them can drive to the stadium alone.
And backing Croucher up is a freshman named Marshall Manning, who made his varsity debut on ESPN2 on August 20 and completed the only pass he threw. His father threw a few himself.
That is a five-star, three four-stars and a Manning on one roster.
Trinity has one four-star and has not lost
This is where the game gets interesting, and where the national boards have some explaining to do.
The Shamrocks have won three consecutive Kentucky Class 6A state championships, the most recent 28-14 over South Warren last December, and they finished 13-2. Jay Cobb is in his sixth season since taking over from Bob Beatty in 2021. They are chasing a fourth straight, and the Louisville Courier Journal built its August preview around one question: whether they could survive the schedule they made to chase it. The paper's own word for that schedule, in its own headline, was murderous.
Three weeks in, it has not been close. Trinity went to Cincinnati and beat Anderson 59-13, and Anderson was ranked 24th in the country at the time. It went to St. Louis and beat Christian Brothers 52-21, outscoring them 28-7 after halftime. Then it came home and handled Archbishop Moeller 31-14.
Three games, three states, 142 points scored and 48 allowed. No Kentucky opponent yet.
The Moeller result is the one to hold onto. Moeller beat Trinity 35-21 in September of last year. Trinity beat Moeller by 17 this year with what is essentially the same group. That is a program that got better, measured against a fixed opponent, which is the only honest way to measure anything in September.
Allen Evans is the four-star, a junior cornerback ranked 76th nationally and second in Kentucky, and he committed to Vanderbilt in June after flipping off a Louisville pledge. Last season he had 24 tackles, 11 pass breakups and two and a half tackles for loss. Elijah Burns-Crump, a safety headed to Duke, had 56 tackles and four interceptions. Sebastian Blue, a defensive end going to Louisville, had nine sacks. Zane Johnson, the quarterback, is committed to Buffalo and has thrown for 367 yards and two scores without an interception in the games MaxPreps has entered.
Baylor's roster will send more players to bigger programs. Trinity's roster has won more football games. Both of those are true on Friday night and only one of them counts after kickoff.
Where the game actually turns
Baylor has scored 126 points in three games and given up 65, and the 65 is the number worth watching. Rabun Gap put 33 on them last week, more than anyone has, and Baylor had to answer in the second half to win 51-33.
Kimrey said afterward: "Our offensive line continues to improve every week. I can't say enough about their grit and toughness."
And: "They continue to show character and poise when adversity hits."
Trinity is allowing 16 points a game against three out-of-state opponents. Baylor is bringing a 15-game winning streak that goes back to last season and a running back nobody has slowed down.
Kimrey has done this before, at a level most high school coaches never see. Before Baylor he spent 17 years at Hammond School in Columbia, South Carolina, and went 194-20 with twelve state championships, six of them in a row, which nobody in that state had done.
The thing about sold-out buildings
There is no series history here. We looked, USA TODAY's Game of the Week breakdown looked, and no publisher states that these two schools have ever played each other, or that they haven't. Sometimes the record simply does not exist.
So there is no revenge and no streak to defend and no film from last year's meeting, because there wasn't one. Just a Kentucky program that has won three titles in a row and cannot get a national board to take it seriously, and a Tennessee program with the best running back in the country and a Manning holding the clipboard.
Trinity's fans worked out what that was worth before the polls did. They bought the whole building.
