The 2026 season is one weekend old and our National Top 50 already has some explaining to do. Grayson, our No. 11, walked into Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday and fell behind 37-0 to North Gwinnett, a team that is not on our board, before the final settled at 37-22. Everybody else near the top either won or watched.

Grayson owes the country an answer
The full breakdown runs separately, because a top-15 team losing its opener by 15 to an unranked opponent deserves its own room. The short version: North Gwinnett quarterback Elam Rahman went 8 of 9 with three touchdowns, the Bulldogs led 22-0 at half and 37-0 in the third, and every Grayson point came after the outcome had been decided.
Nobody outside Loganville should gloat. Grayson is the first team on our board to lose in 2026, not the last. But the board meets on Tuesday, and No. 11 is not walking out of that meeting still No. 11.
Gorman finished at halftime
Bishop Gorman's opener in Las Vegas sat through a lightning delay of roughly 90 minutes, restarted, and was called at halftime with the scoreboard reading 41-0 over Somerset-Losee. The Review-Journal put Losee's total offense at minus-14 yards. Minus. Fourteen.
Ace Amina went 4 for 4 with a touchdown before the weather closed the show, and Azavier McDaniel took an interception back 35 yards for a score. Our No. 3 played one half of football this week and it was the most lopsided half in America.
The date that matters is Friday. St. John Bosco, our No. 2, lands at Fertitta Field, and the winner owns the early inside track in the national title race. More on that below.
Utah would like the country to look west
Corner Canyon, our No. 14, led Davis of Kaysville just 7-6 at halftime on Friday, then scored 37 unanswered points on the unanimous Region 1 favorite and won 51-14. SPIN was in the building in Kaysville: the run took the game from 7-6 to 44-6 with a 30-0 third quarter in the middle of it, and Jaxon Pehrson, in his first varsity start, finished with 206 passing yards, three touchdown passes and 103 rushing yards. New head coach Casey Sutera is 1-0 by 37 points over the No. 5 team on our Utah board. That is a debut.
Utah's week was not done arguing. West of Salt Lake City, our Utah No. 8, beat Arbor View of Las Vegas, the No. 3 team on our Nevada board, 20-14. That result gets its own column today, because it orders two states.
Lone Peak, our No. 21, won 33-21 at Crimson Cliffs, which matters mostly for what it sets up: IMG Academy, our No. 5, visits Lone Peak next Friday. A top-25 home team against a top-five traveling powerhouse, in Utah, in August. On paper, it is one of the biggest regular-season games the state has ever hosted.
And Orem, the defending Utah 5A champion, beat Kamehameha Kapalama 16-7 in Honolulu in a game a tropical storm moved up a day. Sloane has that story, and it is worth your time.
Florida played pretend, and one of ours sweated
Miami Carol City, our No. 18, needed overtime to get past West Boca Raton 24-23 in a Palm Beach County kickoff classic on Friday. Nicholas Lennear won it with a touchdown catch in the extra period. The preseason classic does not count on records, so officially nothing happened. Unofficially, our No. 18 got all it wanted from a team not on our board, and we noted it in pen.
Week two is the real opener
The opening week was an appetizer eaten during a thunderstorm. Now the schedule gets serious. Brentwood Academy, our No. 12, visits Baylor School, our No. 4, on Thursday night on ESPN2, a rematch of last season's Tennessee DII-AAA title game per SI. Bosco at Gorman goes Friday in Las Vegas, our 2 versus our 3. IMG at Lone Peak goes the same night, our 5 versus our 21. Gainesville of Georgia, our No. 50, visits Buford, our No. 6, on Saturday on ESPN2.
And Utah is not done hosting. Mater Dei, our No. 9, visits Orem on Aug. 29, and Gorman goes to Lone Peak on Sept. 4. Count it: three straight weeks with a National Top 10 team playing a game in Utah.
Four board-on-board games inside the next eight days. The sheet giveth.
One weekend in, the top of the board did nothing wrong and the middle already has a hole in it. Somebody always finds out first. This year it was Grayson.
