The opening weekend refused to end on Friday night. One Nevada game sat suspended at 7-5 while Saturday's editions filed, a Hawaii slate died on the vine, and a California team still had a Saturday kickoff in Honolulu. All of it has answers now.

Faith Lutheran makes Nevada's week worse
On Saturday we wrote that the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 in the Nevada rankings all lost, and we left one game out of that sentence on purpose, because it had no final anywhere in print. It does now. Faith Lutheran, No. 6 on that same board, lost 43-35 to Mater Academy East of Las Vegas in a game that started Friday, stopped for lightning after one quarter, and finished Saturday.
The ranked tier on our Nevada board has taken four losses in week one. Gorman, which needed exactly one half to win its opener, is carrying the state's weekend by itself.
The game deserves better than a scoreboard line. Sloane has the whole two-day story, including the lineman who ended it.
Gorman might play two quarterbacks against Bosco
The Review-Journal reports that Gorman's quarterback derby is still live going into the biggest game of the early national season. Junior Ace Amina and senior Chance Thomas, a Kansas commit per the RJ, split the work in the 41-0 opener, and coach Brent Browner left the door wide open.
"Everything's on the table," Browner said, per the Review-Journal. "This place is built on a simple concept: competition."
The table gets crowded Friday. St. John Bosco, No. 2 nationally, lands at Fertitta Field to face No. 3. A quarterback derby at a top-three team in Bosco week is not a problem. It is a plot.
California finished 8 for 8 in Hawaii
On Saturday we told you eight Southern Section teams had put games on Hawaii schedules around the storm, and that the first four verified finals were lopsided. The trip is over now, and the sweep is clean.
Edison of Huntington Beach won the only game left on Oahu's Saturday slate, 41-27 at Iolani, after leading 27-0 before halftime, per the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Sam Thomson threw three touchdown passes. Add the finals that reached print after our Saturday editions, Capistrano Valley 55-6 over Damien of Honolulu in a game quietly moved up to Friday, Beaumont of Riverside County 49-6 over Hilo, Chaminade of West Hills 38-9 over Leilehua, and California's traveling party went 8-0 against Hawaii by our count, with no final closer than 14 points. SI had the Thursday and Friday games at 7-0 before Edison finished the job on Saturday.
Two honesty notes ride along: two of the eight finals still rest on a single outlet, and the stat pages carry the Chaminade game as a preseason matchup, so call it seven wins and a tune-up if you prefer. Either way, Hawaii did not win any of them. None of it moves a SPIN board, but it is a preview of how the Southern Section travels, and Utah gets the live version next: American Fork visits Mater Dei of Santa Ana on Friday, and Mater Dei comes to Orem on Aug. 29.
The rest of Hawaii's public-school Saturday never happened. The state Department of Education cancelled every Saturday event on public-school campuses ahead of Tropical Storm Lala, per SI, wiping out Kahuku at Waianae and Punahou at Moanalua among others. Kahuku, off its win over Saint Louis two weekends ago, sits 1-0 and idle.
The 7-0 in Las Vegas will not settle
Saturday's Out West wrap printed Centennial of Las Vegas 7, Coronado of Henderson 0 single-sourced to MaxPreps on a lightning-delayed night, and flagged it as exactly that. The situation got stranger, not cleaner.
MaxPreps now carries the game as a final called at halftime for weather, 7-0, with Coronado 0-1. The Review-Journal's weekend recap lists Coronado at Centennial among nine Southern Nevada games postponed or cancelled by the lightning. A final and a cancellation cannot both be true. Until Nevada's scorekeepers pick one, Nevada's No. 10 has a record that is a question mark, and that score appears nowhere in our records as settled. We will print the resolution when it exists.
Utah's week one had one more gift in it
The Deseret News weekend flashback surfaced the game of Utah's opening week a few hours after our Saturday pieces were already out: Snow Canyon 64, Spanish Fork 62, in triple overtime on Friday night. Hawkin Rasmussen threw six touchdowns in his debut, Parker Olson threw five and ran for two more, and it still took three extra periods to separate them, per the Deseret News. Neither team is on our Utah board. The game of the weekend rarely involves the rankings, and this one did not come close.
One more Deseret number worth keeping: 27 of Utah's 29 first-year head coaches debuted in week one, and 13 of them won. One of the 13 won by 37 points in Kaysville. You may have read about him.
Week one opened on a Wednesday in Atlanta and needed a Saturday restart in Las Vegas to finish. Week two runs Thursday through Saturday just to fit its headliners: Brentwood Academy at Baylor School on ESPN2 on Thursday, then Bosco at Gorman and IMG at Lone Peak on Friday night, then Gainesville of Georgia at Buford on ESPN2 on Saturday. Week one would not end on time. Week two is not going to wait.
