Somewhere on a bus rolling north out of Temecula late Friday, a 6-0 football team was doing the math on 95 points. Mountain Ridge of Herriman had just beaten Chaparral 54-41, in California, on a night when the defense gave up 41 and it did not matter. That is the kind of game that gets replayed on phones in the back of the bus until the battery dies.
It is also the kind of game that holds a ranking. Mountain Ridge stays second in Utah and climbs six places to 36th on the SPIN Power 100. It is the only Utah team on the national board without a loss.
Corner Canyon held its own in-state test
Corner Canyon beat Lone Peak 37-14 in Draper. Both teams were on this board going in, and the game did what a game between the first and eighth teams should do: it confirmed the order. Corner Canyon stays first at 5-1 and is 25th in the country. Lone Peak stays eighth at 3-3, because a road loss to the region's best team by 23 is not the sort of result that moves a team down past teams that beat lesser opponents.
Skyridge went to Lehi and won 28-20, a crosstown game that finished an eight point game, and holds third. It is 70th nationally.
The rest of the board did its job
West of Salt Lake City beat Hillcrest 55-6 and is 6-0. American Fork went to Davis and won 29-21, a sixth ranked team beating a 10th ranked team on the road, which is exactly what the board expected. Davis holds 10th on the strength of a card that still beats everyone below it. Herriman won 48-7 at Westlake. Ridgeline won at Deseret Peak. Orem did not play.
Ten teams. Ten holds. Some weeks the board's most defensible move is not moving.

What the bus ride was really about
Utah has three teams on the national board: Corner Canyon at 25, Mountain Ridge at 36, Skyridge at 70. One of the three left the state on Friday and came back with a win. The math on the bus was not 54 plus 41. It was how many more of those trips it takes before the rest of the country stops treating a Utah ranking like a regional courtesy.
