Put the number on the table first: 37-0. That is where North Gwinnett had Grayson, our No. 11, by the third quarter Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Rams scored 22 after that, every point of it with North Gwinnett calling off the dogs, and the box score got decorated while nothing got changed. Final: 37-22, in the Corky Kell and Dave Hunter Classic, the state's showcase opener.

The quarterback did not miss
North Gwinnett's Elam Rahman attempted nine passes and completed eight, three of them for touchdowns. You can play the position for four years and never have a night that clean. Jake Godfree, an NC State commit at linebacker, added a 56-yard pick-six, which is the kind of play that turns a bad night into a stampede.
The AJC wrote that North Gwinnett "hit the bully early." Read that again. Grayson, a program with a state title pedigree and a top-15 national ranking on our board, is the bully in that sentence, and the beat writers watched the bully take it on the chin from the opening kickoff.
Grayson threw its way back to respectable
Deuce Smith deserves better than the final score. The Grayson quarterback threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns, most of it in a comeback that made the fourth quarter interesting and the final margin merely bad. The AJC also noted this was the most points Grayson has allowed since the 2023 state semifinals, and North Gwinnett's fourth straight win in the series.
That last stat is the one that should bother Grayson fans. This was not a one-night accident. It is a trend with a four-game sample.
Before anybody crowns North Gwinnett
The tempting take is that North Gwinnett just announced itself as a national team, and the temptation is earned. An 8-of-9 night, a 37-0 lead on a top-15 opponent, a fourth straight win in the series. The bigger story of Wednesday might turn out to be the winner.
Here is what gives us pause, from our own read of the game. A lot of what buried Grayson was Grayson: self-inflicted wounds, over and over, and not the opening-night kind. These looked systemic, the sort of mistakes that take a month of practices to coach out, not a week. Beating a team that is busy beating itself tells you less than a 37-0 scoreboard implies. North Gwinnett looked excellent. Whether it looked elite is a question the season gets to answer, and we are comfortable letting it.
What the board does about it
Here is the honest version of the conversation we will have on Tuesday. Grayson was our No. 11 on the strength of talent, program history, and a schedule that would prove it out. One game into the season, the talent got outplayed at every spot that decides August football, in new head coach Greg Carswell's Grayson debut, per the AJC.
A loss to a quality in-state opponent does not erase a season. But 37 straight points is not a quality loss. It is a grading event. Grayson will slide, the only question is the floor, and North Gwinnett just played itself into a national conversation nobody was having about it a week ago.
We ranked Grayson 11th in America. Wednesday made that number look generous, and we do not get paid to be generous. Expect the next Top 50 to have North Gwinnett on it, and Grayson off it.
