The Numbers

Key Terms

STRANOVA rating
SPIN's team rating. Every game this season is credited by margin (with diminishing returns for blowouts), adjusted for who the opponent was and where it was played. A bigger rating gap means a bigger projected margin.
Opponent adjusted rank
Where a unit ranks among 138 FBS teams (1 is best) after accounting for the quality of the offenses and defenses it faced.
Vs opponent norm
How a team did in one game compared with what that opponent normally allows (for an offense) or normally produces (for a defense), not counting that game. Green is better, red is worse, white is about even.
Net pass yards per dropback
Passing yards after sack losses, divided by pass attempts plus sacks.
Rush yards per designed carry
Rushing yards on designed runs only. Sacks and their yardage are counted as passing plays.
Win probability
How often the favorite would win if this game were played many times, based on the rating gap.

The Matchup Grid

Utah owns the better scoring offense and the better run game. BYU owns the better pass offense, pass defense and run defense. Scoring defense is a one-rank toss-up (BYU 15th, Utah 16th). The longer bar is the better rank.

How to read the ranks: we estimate every FBS team's scoring, rushing and passing strength from all of this season's games at once. A team that faced strong defenses is not penalized for it. Ranks are STRANOVA estimates, not raw national rankings.

Utah offense vs BYU defense

  • Expected on a neutral field: 28.2 points, 5.23 yards per designed carry, 5.94 net yards per dropback.
  • Utah's run game ranks 7th and meets the 30th ranked BYU run defense. Utah's pass offense ranks 23rd against the 5th ranked BYU pass defense.
  • Utah is 8-0 and has scored 33 or more in 5 of its 8 games.

BYU offense vs Utah defense

  • Expected on a neutral field: 22.9 points, 4.60 yards per designed carry, 7.20 net yards per dropback.
  • BYU's pass offense ranks 21st and meets the 41st ranked Utah pass defense. BYU's run game ranks 54th against the 46th ranked Utah run defense.
  • Utah's scoring defense ranks 16th and held 6 of 7 FBS opponents under their scoring norm.

Neutral field numbers come from the opponent adjusted scoring, rushing and passing estimates alone. The projected score on the cover adds a home field credit to Utah and takes it from BYU.

Who Each Team Has Actually Played

BYU has played the tougher schedule on offense: its FBS opponents' scoring offenses average 44th against 69th for Utah's. Scoring defenses are nearly even, 56th for BYU's opponents and 59th for Utah's. Both teams played one FCS opponent and one common opponent, Iowa State.

Home And Road Split

Saturday is Utah at home and BYU on the road. Here is what each team has done in exactly that spot, against FBS opponents only.

Season7+4.1+0.19+1.65+12.9+0.78+2.63
What the split says. Utah's offense has been better at home (+12.5 points vs norm) than on the road (+8.0). BYU's defense has been much better at home (+17.9) than on the road (+6.3), and its offense has scored at +2.8 on the road against +5.1 at home. Both samples are tiny (4 and 3 games), and part of any home and road gap is the normal home field effect, which the table does not remove. We therefore blend the site numbers with the full season, as the next table shows.

Source: ESPN box scores. Points per 100 yards is points scored divided by total yards. Third down counts come from the game rows (Utah 53 of 98 for the season). Turnover timing by quarter is not in the box score feed and is not shown. Red zone efficiency follows in its own section.

Red Zone Efficiency

The red zone gap in this game is on defense. Utah's defense has let opponents score on 68% of their trips inside the 20 and reach the end zone on 42%. BYU's defense has let them score on 90% and reach the end zone on 71%. On offense the two teams are close. Against the norms of the teams they played, Utah's defense is still the standout.

A trip is a drive on which the offense ran a play from inside the opponent's 20. A drive that only ran out the clock is not counted. Points per trip counts 7 for a touchdown and 3 for a field goal. FCS games are left out, as elsewhere. These are SPIN counts built from play by play drive data, not a posted league stat. Opponent norms below use the opponents' other FBS games, 13 to 30 trips each.

Is it real? Against what their opponents usually do

For each game we take the opponent's red zone record in its other FBS games (the game against Utah or BYU is left out) and weight it by how many trips this game had. Positive on offense and negative on defense is good. Points are percentage points.

The numbers hold up. Utah's defense was not built against weak offenses. The offenses it faced normally score on 82% of their red zone trips and reach the end zone on 62%. Utah held them to 68% and 42%, the biggest gap of any unit in this game. Both offenses score touchdowns well above what their opponents' defenses normally allow (Utah 73% against 62%, BYU 74% against 61%), while scoring of any kind is close to the norm. BYU's defense is the one unit that is worse than its norm: opponents scored on 90% of trips against a norm of 87%.

What the red zone says. Utah's offense scores on 87% of its trips (73% touchdowns), BYU's on 85% (74% touchdowns), so neither side has an edge there. The difference is the other end. BYU's offense will face a Utah defense that has held opponents to points on 68% of trips, and Utah's offense will face a BYU defense that has allowed points on 90%. Utah's defense at home has been tighter still (7 of 12 trips scored on). Every one of these is a small sample: 19 to 30 trips per unit, so one trip moves a rate by 3 to 5 points.

The Three Closest Comparables

For each team, the three past opponents whose offense and defense profile looks most like Saturday's opponent. These games are the closest thing to a rehearsal.

ArizonaHomeW 28-17+1126.3
UCFRoadL 31-39−839.0

Average margin +2.3, record 2-1. 2 home and 1 road.

What the comparables say. Utah beat BYU-type opponents by 13.0 on average. Moving the road game to a home site puts that near +14.0. BYU's Utah-type opponents averaged +2.3 for BYU. Moving the home games to a road site puts that near +0.3. Averaging the two views gives Utah by about 6.8, below the model of record margin and close to the market.

Treat this as a sanity check, not a forecast. Three games per team, profile gaps of 22 to 42 (lower means a closer match to Saturday's opponent), and different injuries in several of them. Common opponent: Utah won at Iowa State 31-17 (road). BYU beat Iowa State 24-10 (home). Both margins were 14.

Availability

The formal Big 12 availability reports come out this week. Until they do, this is what is reported.

Utah

  • Quarterback Devon Dampier is the quarterback named in this week's previews. We found no injury report on him as of Wednesday.
  • First-year head coach Morgan Scalley. Utah is 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big 12.

BYU

  • Running back LJ Martin hurt his lower leg in the 17-10 win at TCU on Oct. 3 and missed the next four games. He is listed as questionable for Utah.
  • Quarterback Bear Bachmeier is named in this week's previews. We found no injury report on him as of Wednesday.

What the Martin absence looks like in the data

The Martin Gap. BYU's rushing against opponent norms averaged +1.23 yards per carry in its three FBS games before the injury (Arizona, Colorado State, TCU) and −0.60 in the four FBS games without him (Iowa State, Notre Dame, UCF, Arizona State). The Arizona State game was the low point at −3.44. Different opponents, so read it as a pattern and not proof.

The Swing Sheet

The handful of numbers that decide this game, each one checkable at halftime.

The 55 Line. Utah's offense follows its third downs. In all five games where Utah converted 55 percent or more of its third downs, it scored 33 or more points (Idaho 66, Arkansas 43, Utah State 33, Kansas 41, Cincinnati 49). In the three games under 51 percent (Iowa State 30%, Colorado 47%, Houston 50%) it scored 31, 27 and 21. At home Utah converts 58% (35 of 60). On the road 47% (18 of 38).
The Half Line. BYU's only loss is its only game in which the opponent converted more than half its third downs: UCF went 9 of 16 (56%). In all seven BYU wins the opponent converted 50% or fewer (Colorado State exactly 7 of 14). At home BYU's defense allows 35% (26 of 74). On the road 47% (20 of 43). Utah is at home and converts 58%.

How STRANOVA Works, In 60 Seconds

STRANOVA rates every team from every game it has played. Each result is credited by margin with diminishing returns, so a blowout counts for little more than a comfortable win. Home field is credited. Ratings start from conference averages, so a team that has played a weak schedule is not overrated.

Tested on games it had not seen. Walk-forward on 314 FBS vs FBS games in weeks 4 to 9: 67.8% winner accuracy against 58.3% for picking the home team and 64.6% for picking the better record.
