PLANTATION, Fla. — American Heritage led 21-0 in the third quarter of the Broward County Classic and had to go to overtime to win it.
Tremaine Mullen's short run started it. Nieman Lawrence threw to Tray Proctor to make it three scores. Then East St. Louis scored 28 unanswered, tying it on Reece Shanklin's 42-yard throw to Ronnie Gomiller.
In the extra period Lawrence went play-action to Michael Stringer for the touchdown, and Jaytoin Thomas intercepted the pass that would have answered it.
The context is the part worth sitting with. SPIN removed American Heritage from the National Top 50 on Aug. 24, after one August loss — 24-7 to West Boca Raton, one touchdown and nothing else. We said at the time the call was consistent with dropping Grayson eight days earlier, and that consistency was the point.
Four nights later it beat East St. Louis, which we had just put on the board at No. 39 for ending a 19-game winning streak.
Zack Poff at MaxPreps filed it as an upset. From where we sit it is evidence that a team priced on one bad night in August is better than one bad night in August.
